Auckland and Dunedin businesses issued their own copper tokens in 1857 and 48 others followed with everyone issuing their own penny and halfpenny tokens until 1881. The shortage of lower denomination coins caused such a problem that The New Zealand Numismatic Society adopted the decimal system of coinage, and in 1933 New Zealand produced its own coins to become the most remote, self-governing dominion of the British Commonwealth to produce their own coinage.
