The Gold Centenario was first minted in 1921 to mark the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. It celebrates the victory of Mexico against the colonial power Spain after a long war of independence in 1821. The value of the gold Centenario is based on the daily price of gold. Centenarios minted during the first decade of production command especially high collectors' prices.
